Meet Ginger, who was adopted from a shelter.

Can I take a photo of your dog?
“Yeah, but it probably will be the last time. She’s not going to make it.

“They don’t know what’s wrong with her. She won’t eat, and she’s been losing weight. She’s lost about 5 pounds in two weeks. She’s been at the vet all this week. They’ve been feeding her with a syringe.

“The vet said they’d like to keep her a few more days to run some more tests. I went by and got her today so I could spend a little time with her while I can.

“She’s just like one of the kids, like everybody’s dog is. When you spend 11 years with someone, day in and day out, you get real attached.

“It’s tough, but it’s part of life. When you have pets, you’re going to have to deal with this at some point. But that doesn’t make it any easier.”

Jayda had been shot several times with a pellet gun and was being held at Rosenberg Animal Shelter when she was featured on a pets blog, From Under the Bridge.

“She reminded me of my childhood dog, Butter, and I wanted to adopt her. True Blue Rescue sprung her from the shelter. I went to Petsmart in Houston to meet her and fell in love.

“I had to convince my husband to get another dog. He agreed I could have her for my birthday.

“We took Bella, our pit bull, for a meet and greet, and brought her home that day. That very night, Jayda was stung on the eye by a bee or wasp and we took her to the ER twice. I was so worried about her. Her eyes are what drew me to her.

“This was in November 2009. She recovered and has been with us ever since. She’s a very good dog and kind of a loner. She loves being petted, but it has to be her idea.”

“Right now we have 65 adult dogs, 15 puppies, 35 adult cats, 30 kittens and two horses. One of the horses came from a man who was pulling it by a rope behind his pickup truck. When my husband and I saw that, I said I hope he takes her to a good pasture where she can get some groceries. She was in bad shape. You could see every bone in her body.

“An hour and a half later, he was in my driveway with the horse. I ended up taking her to the vet, and she was 450 pounds underweight. We’ve had her three years now, and she’s fat and sassy. She’s up for adoption. But she needs someone who’s experienced with horses, because she’ll let them know who’s the boss.”
