“I was working at Walmart on the night shift, but I was going to move to days because my shift got real boring. So out of curiosity I was thinking, there have to be some cute girls on the day shift, right? Like, somebody.

“I kept hearing the name Hunter float around. So when I moved to the day shift I was like, I’ve got to find that girl with Hunter on her name tag.

“I was working in receiving, and we had 20-something people on our team. I was looking for someone who fit the description: a 5-foot-5 or 5-foot-6 blond girl with blue eyes. I figured that shouldn’t be too hard. But it took me two days because she was off my first day on the shift.

“That next day, I saw her in the break room. She was sitting there eating a bag of strawberry-flavored jelly beans. I asked her if it was OK if I sat down, and she said, ‘Yeah.’ I didn’t exactly know what to say after that. She was the first one to really speak up. She said, ‘Hey, would you like some jelly beans?’ And I was like, ‘Sure.’

“So our relationship started with jelly beans. Now here we are, about two years later, and we’re engaged.”

“I met her on a Friday. We were engaged the following Friday. Married a month later. Two weeks after that, we were living in Tokyo because I already had a job lined up there to teach English to Japanese businessmen.

“When I interviewed for that job in October, they wanted to send me right away. I said, ‘No, I don’t think I should go over there single. I need to be married.’ They asked if I had somebody in mind. I had a girlfriend, but I knew we weren’t going to get married. So I said, ‘No, I don’t.’ Then they asked, ‘Well, when can you be married?’ So I just picked a date out of the clear blue sky. I told them Feb. 1. I was close. I met my wife during Christmas break. We were married on Feb. 6.”

What did she think about all of that?
“She was super cool about the whole thing. When we first met I asked her, ‘What would you think if you met some guy and he said that we’re going to get married and go live in Japan?’ And she said, ‘I think it would be exciting.’ That was the right answer because I had asked other girls, and they all said, ‘Are you crazy?’”

“We’re getting married Sept. 14. We’ve been together eight years now.

“I couldn’t get a divorce from my first wife; she was giving me a hard time. But we finally got it done. I got married when I was real young, and all we ever did was bump heads.

“Now, me and her are real compatible. We rarely fight. I mean, we bicker like two little kids every once in a while, but we make up after that and everything’s fine.

“We ain’t doing too bad now. My bait business is pretty good, and she’s going to start a food truck around the first of the year. So that’s going to be our future plans.”
