“One day I noticed this lump and figured it was a hernia. I had been at the driving range a lot, so I thought it might have been from practicing golf too much. I went to the doctor and he said, ‘That’s not a hernia. You need to go to the emergency room.’

“It turned out to be cancer. I had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was already in the fourth stage, so they gave me an experimental drug. I think only 22 people in the United States were getting it. It didn’t take but about five months, and it cured it all.

“The drug had a list of about 30 side effects, but I didn’t get any of them. I did itch a little bit on my back, but it was no big deal. That’s why I say I’m a pretty lucky guy.

“I never looked at the cancer as a death sentence or anything. I just went in there and thought, I’ll be out in no time.

“I’ve always tried to keep a positive outlook on life. But now when I read over all my old paperwork I think, man, I could have been gone. I must have some guardian angels up there. I’ve got another shot at life.”

“I play on the Golf Channel Amateur Tour and have taken my share of first places. But my job is very demanding, last year especially, so I kind of got a little rusty.

“I’m a construction project manager, and I’ve worked all over the United States and Canada. When I’m away from home and when I come back, I want to dedicate time to my kids and try to catch up on all their activities. Sometimes, when I’m a few holes into a round, I’ll find myself wondering what my son’s doing or what my daughter’s doing. It’s tough to stay focused on the game, but they’re very important to me.”

“We play quite a bit of golf together. It’s the challenge that every time you go out there, you want to hit a better shot. Once you hit a good shot, you just keep going. You’ll have your bad times, but it’s the good times you remember most.”

“You can call it Frisbee golf or disc golf. Another term is frolf, but that’s not used too much.

“I come out here about once a week to play. It’s a challenge.

“I like golf but it’s expensive. You can play 10 rounds here for free. If I play one round of golf, it costs $50.

“Sometimes I see people come out here playing with no shirt on and a pair of gym shorts. Then others get all decked out with their polo shirts, golf shorts and shoes. Whatever works, I guess.”
