“I guess you could say I’m a disconnected kind of person. I mean, I like getting out and about, but I like my privacy as well. It’s like being an extrovert and introvert at the same time. I think there are other people in the world like that. You kind of just mind your own business, stay to yourself, and not really get into any drama.

“Some of that has to do with how crazy things are these days. You don’t want to fly. You don’t want to go to school. You don’t want to go to church. You worry about gunmen. You worry about this. You worry about that.

“You see so much of it on TV and social media. It’s one of the reasons I’m not really on Facebook anymore. There’s just too much, you know?

“I think technology is a gift and a curse. It’s supposed to bring people together, but it really doesn’t. With all these gadgets and interactive devices, it’s probably the best time to be alive right now. Yet you sometimes feel alone in the world.”

“When I was growing up, I played with Tonka toys and G.I. Joes. We had the first Atari game, Pong, and thought that was pretty cool. But I could never have imagined how advanced things would become.

“Today, we take for granted being able to see somebody on our cell phone while we’re talking to them. How amazing is that?

“Who knows where things will go from here. It’s up to someone’s imagination. If you can imagine it, and you’re smart enough to make it happen, it can become reality.”

“The company I work for is very flexible. When it’s needed, it’s really accommodating to be able to work from home. Plus nowadays, I can pretty much do everything I need using my phone and laptop. As long as I have those essentials, I can do my job.”

Do you think people today rely too much on those devices?
“I know that when my phone battery runs out I’m thinking, OK, how do I get around, what am I going to do now? I cannot communicate because I hardly ever memorize anybody’s phone number. Since I don’t have phone access I go to the next best thing, my laptop, which is my lifesaver. Not that we don’t know any better, but I guess you could say we do take those devices for granted. They’re pretty much a part of everything we do.”

“I’d like to do something with neuroscience, like help create new technology. They have robotics nowadays that can help the brain with muscle movements. It would be cool to develop things like that, maybe to help blind people see again by activating neuronic sensors in their brain. I just find the brain really interesting.”
