Father he never knew died while in Mexico

Gilbert Velasco is one of four boys, along with five girls, in his family. He was the only one born in Mexico.

“I was the only kid in our family born in Mexico, but I wasn’t even 1 when we moved to Texas. We’ve never been back.

“My father was born and raised down there and didn’t want to leave, so I never got a chance to know him. Then one day, when I was 15, we got this phone call that said he had been killed. People took his land, his cattle, a bunch of stuff. We put the pieces together. We think it was the drug cartel.

“Since then, things have gotten a lot worse down there with all these drug lords and bad stuff going on. People used to take family vacations down there, but you can’t do that anymore. It’s not safe. You don’t even have the freedom of going on a family picnic because they will hit you up. They will take something from you. It’s a pretty sad story, really.”
