Candice Flores, 17, is a senior at Dayton High School.

“I was riding in an ATV, a Ranger six-seater, and it rolled. My foot got caught underneath the tail bed. I just remember waking up and seeing people trying to lift the Ranger off of us. They used Life Flight to take us to Memorial Hermann Hospital. I was supposed to be there for a month and a half, but I ended up getting out after two weeks.”

How bad was your injury?
“I had a partial foot amputation. I lost two toes and a portion of my foot, but they put a skin graft over it. It was pretty rough, but I managed to get through it all. I went to rehab to learn how to walk again. I had to learn how to balance on my foot and be able to walk without a limp on one side. It took about three or four months.

“The biggest adjustment was not being able to wear sandals anymore. I used to wear flip-flops all the time, but I don’t really want people looking at my foot. I’ve kind of gotten used to it now.”
