He always went the extra mile to help others
A recent story on Ahime Ornelas included a piece about her indecision of what to do following high school. A chance meeting with a groundskeeper at Lee College sent Ahime on her way to a college experience that ultimately helped launch a successful career in education.
In response to the story, several people commented about that groundskeeper, Jesse Quinones. According to his son, Luis, going the extra mile to help people is nothing new for Jesse.
“I didn’t know about the story until my niece sent it to us via text. I just happened to be eating breakfast with my dad and my sisters. It surprised me that (Ahime) remembered the impact that my father had on her so many years ago. But it doesn’t surprise our family that he helped her. He helped so many others at Lee College during the 27 years that he worked there in the maintenance department. My father has always wanted the best for everyone, especially the younger generation, since he didn’t have the opportunity or means to continue his education when he was young. We’re all proud of what he’s been able to do to encourage others.
“Dad retired last year at the good old age of 80. He kind of had to because he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I’m happy to say that he has done very well in controlling it. He still goes and hangs out with the fellas over there at the college. And I’m sure that he wishes he was still working.”
