‘We shelter kids who come over the border alone’

Before moving to Baytown, she worked for an agency that contracted with BCFS in Harlingen.

“I work for a nonprofit called BCFS (Baptist Child and Family Services). A lot of people in Baytown don’t even know we’re here. We shelter kids who come over the border alone. We give them a temporary place to stay, food, clothes, and try to provide them some education, teach them basic English. If they have family members, we try to reach out and see if they can sponsor them.

“I know the kids come here for what they feel will be a better life. I was a migrant myself. I came from Trinidad in 1980. I get satisfaction from knowing I can do something to help these kids.”
