Perfect anniversary present — her own bookstore

Woman in her book store

She met her husband at the movie, “Nightmare on Elm Street.” They married during her senior year in high school.

“I’m a nurse by trade and was traveling a lot, auditing physicians’ offices for a Medicare HMO. I’ve always loved to read, but it was getting to be an expensive habit. So everywhere I went, I tracked down used bookstores.

“One day I was working late at home, inputting information at 3 in the morning. I was tired and feeling so frustrated with my job. My son had Craigslist up on the computer, and I happened to see a bookstore for sale. So I went in and woke up my husband and asked, ‘Can I buy a bookstore?’

“It was our 25th anniversary and he was going to buy me a ring. I said, ‘I don’t want a ring, I want a bookstore. Will you buy it for me?’ Before you know it, we bought it. It was in Humble. We changed the name and moved it here.

“So I guess I’m just an old nurse who wanted to own a bookstore, and that’s what I’m doing. It keeps me pretty busy, but I’m still able to read about one book a day.”
