After what he saw, ‘I won’t touch chicken livers’

Retired longshoreman walks his dog at park

“He rules the house. He always lets us know when he’s ready to go walking.”

“I’m a retired longshoreman. That was some hard work, cutting and welding to repair those big containers they ship overseas.

“And I’ve had some other interesting jobs. I worked in a chicken plant for more than 10 years, processing the chickens that you buy in the grocery store. That was rough. I mean, it was smelly, it was dirty. You know, it wasn’t hard work, it was just … I did a little bit of everything, from killing the chickens to pulling the entrails out of them. Once you got used to doing it, you didn’t think twice about it. It was just part of the job.”

Has that experience affected your appetite for chicken?
“I won’t eat a chicken liver, I’ll tell you that. I’ll eat all the rest of it. But after seeing some of the stuff I saw, I won’t touch chicken livers.”
