Looking back, she’s grateful for life on the road

Among the places her family stayed the longest were Boston and Alaska.

“When I was younger, my mom and my four brothers and sisters and I moved around the United States. I’ve lived everywhere but California and Hawaii.

“My mom was in love with this man, so she just packed up all our stuff and we followed him. I do believe he was a bit of a man on the run. I loved school, so that part of all the moving was really hard for me.

“I look back on it now, though, and I’m grateful. It helped expose me to many different things, like traveling to a lot of weird places and experiencing what it’s like to starve and survive. We did a lot of that.

“It’s not like it got a whole lot better once we settled down, but I think everything comes full circle. I think all of those things helped me become who I am.”
