After cystic fibrosis scare, he’s just your typical kid

Lanyce Miller straps on the football helmet for her 8-year-old son, Bryce.
“He was a preemie, three months early. He didn’t even weigh 3 pounds.
“From the time he was born until he was almost 4 years old, they tried to tell us that he had cystic fibrosis. Even his blood work was showing positive for it. Then one time they did a test and it came back negative. So they did it again and it also showed negative. They decided to test my husband and me, and both of us were negative. That’s when they told us that he didn’t have cystic fibrosis after all.”
What was that whole experience like?
“Being told that your child may not live to see the age of 18, it was hell. For the first four years of his life, we basically lived at the hospital.
“You don’t know what to do. Do you shelter him or do you let him try to live a normal life? When we finally learned he was going to be OK, it was like a weight that I would never want anybody to experience being lifted.
“Now he’s just this neat little guy who gets away with a lot of stuff.”
