“I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and then moved to Queens. I worked for New York City Transit for 30 years. I was a conductor.

“My son has been out here for a while, so I visited a lot during the holidays. Now I’m thinking about moving here or to North Carolina. I want to go some place where nobody knows me, where people can’t bother me for money.

“I finally got tired of all the hustle and bustle in New York. I was always having to look over my shoulder when I went to work at 4:30 in the morning. I got mugged at the age of 21 and made a promise to myself that I’d never let that happen again. Then, a couple years ago, I got robbed when someone broke into my car. I just got tired of it all.”

What would you say to someone considering moving to New York City?
“Go there to make your money and then get out, unless you’re a night life person and just like to hang out all the time.”
