Mom shares power of music with her son

Cecilia Garcia's son wears a Nirvana shirt

Cecilia Garcia’s son, 2-year-old John Anthony, rocks out at a concert.

“Music has meant so much to me that I wanted to share it with my son. I wanted it to be a special bond between us. He’s been listening to Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Johnny Cash, Sublime, Juan Gabriel and a lot other stuff since he was in my belly. So far, he loves it.

“I think music is important. I mean, who doesn’t love music? I want my son to hear a song later in life and remember all those times we danced around in the living room to it or how we sang it as loud as we could. Happy memories, that’s what I want for him through music.”

What role has music played in your life?
“I was in a really bad place a while back, and all I had was music. I was a victim of domestic violence. I lost myself in music. Music is what helped me survive, kept me fighting. I got out alive.

“Since then, I’ve married a wonderful man and became a mother. So when I found out I was expecting, the first thing I did was put music to my belly. My son has been in love with music ever since. He even does a couple dance moves, throws the rock sign up, and tries to sing along to the songs.”
