Looking to do big things in field of biology

Samantha McMichael, a recent graduate of Midway University in Kentucky, hopes to find a job with a biology-related laboratory.

“Biology is the life cycle. You know, wherever you look, it’s biology. You can do a lot with it, especially in science where we’re always innovating and creating things. That’s what I like about it.

“We had to do a research project our senior year. I wanted to do something with forensics, like with DNA, but our PCR machine wasn’t working. So my project was ‘The Prevalence of Escherichia Coli and Fecal Coliforms on Backpacks of College Students in Central Kentucky.’ Basically, it was looking at what kind of nasty stuff students were carrying around on the bottom of their backpacks.

“I guess I did a pretty good job because my paper is under review and will be published soon by Butler University, which is pretty awesome. I’d also like to get it published in another bigger scientific journal. But to know that you’ve published a paper, especially as an undergraduate, it could lead to big things.”
