She summons strength to deal with deaths

Susie Williams’ father died of a cerebral hemorrhage when she was 5.

“My first husband died in a car wreck when he was 22 and I was pregnant with my son. My second husband went in for a hernia repair and got a staph infection. It hit his urinary tract and killed him. I’ve been married to my third husband for 38 years.

“My mother’s husband died when she was very young, so she was a widow woman who raised my two brothers and me. When I got ready to marry again after my first husband died she said, ‘Oh, you can’t do that.’ But I told her I was not going to stop my life for this.

“I wanted to bring up my children with a father. I didn’t have one growing up. My son and daughter were young, and I felt it was important for them to have a father at home.

“When I look back at my life now, I think it was a gift that God gave me to be able to cope with whatever I faced. And I think I’ve handled pretty much whatever has come my way.

“My mother was a strong woman, and I think that helped me a lot. She kind of gave me grounds for being able to deal with everything.”
