Singing takes her to ‘a place of tranquility’
“My dream? Have you heard of the gospel singer named Mahalia Jackson? Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be just like her. I came up singing in the church, and my mom used to listen to her all the time.
“But then my mom started getting these boyfriends who wanted to molest us and stuff. When we would try to tell her about it, she wanted to beat us and yell, ‘He wouldn’t do that.’ Oh, I came from a really dysfunctional family. I didn’t want to bring that into my life. Some things like that, you just have to throw away. You can’t forget about it, but you’ve got to throw it away because you want to move forward in your life.
“I still enjoy singing, though. When I’m singing, the world around me just disappears. It takes me to a place of tranquility. I don’t sing so I can be recognized or anything. I don’t need the fame and glory. I just sing for me.”
