Spreading positivity helps him cope with depression

“A lot of my friends who follow me on Facebook know that I suffer from depression and that I’m being treated for it. Other than seeing my doctor and being on medication, one of the main ways I learned to cope with it is through social media.

“I started reading a lot online. I read quotes, I read scriptures, and I post something every day on my page. Some people think that what I’m posting is specifically about me. But really, it’s me trying to help somebody else.

“I hear from people all the time, young and old, who tell me that what I posted helped them through a difficult moment. My main thing is about spreading positivity. That’s all I want. I want to help somebody from possibly doing something that they might regret later.

“I heard from a lady once who said she was very depressed and that she didn’t know what else to do. I said, ‘Let’s talk about it.’ So I shared some things with her, and I asked her to go to my page and read some of my posts. I told her, ‘There may be something there that connects with you. Just write it down or print it out, and stick it on your mirror so you can look at it every day.’ And she did. She said that helped. She said, ‘I was in the darkest place that you could ever imagine.’ I said, ‘I know where you’ve been. I’ve been there myself.’

“I told her that there is always somebody ready to lend you a hand. If I can stick out my hand to help someone else, that’s what I’m going to continue doing. Because I know where they’ve been. I know that feeling.”
