He’ll help homeless if they’ll help themselves

“Some people may not realize it, but we’ve got a lot of homeless people around Baytown. With everybody that’s out there, maybe some don’t deserve to be in that situation. But I believe you’ve got to do something to pull yourself up. You can’t just keep expecting people to help you if you don’t try to help yourself. One thing I’ve learned is that if you’re trying to help yourself, other people will go to bat for you. But when you’re just trying to use people, you can forget that.”

So how do you know when someone is trying to use you?
“I think you’ll know when you’re being used. If you see someone standing at a stop sign asking for a handout and all that, you can usually tell. If you’ve got a feeling in your heart to help that person, then do it. But don’t always just do it because they’re asking.

“Like I’ve told people before, if you’re hungry, I’ll buy you food. I’m not going to give you money to support your habit, if that’s what you’re looking for. I’m not going to give you money if all you’re going to do is buy beer or Black and Mild cigars. If you’re hungry, I’m going to buy some food and give it to you. Food is a necessity for living. Alcohol and that other stuff, you don’t have to have that. You choose to do that.”
