Voice from above launches long nursing career
“Since I was about a year old, I was always sweating. I used to sweat when I’d drive by a hospital. When I’d get my immunizations in elementary school, I’d pass out or come close to it. I’d see a drop of blood, and I’d pass out.
“One day when I was 35, I was at UTMB in Galveston. They wanted to run some tests on my son. While I was out in the smoking area, I started thinking about what I wanted to do next with my life. My hands were all sweaty and clammy, just being there. Then, all of a sudden, I heard this audible voice say, ‘Go be a nurse.’ I turned around and didn’t see one person out there. It scared the heck out of me. So I looked up and thought, OK. I went and found a nurse, and I asked if there was a college in Galveston where I could study nursing. She said there was, so I went and signed up for pre-nursing.
“Classes started in about a month. The thing is, that feeling I had of always being sweaty never came back. I had my doubts a little bit until I got to labor and delivery. The doctor handed me the placenta because I was right there, wanting to learn. It didn’t bother me at all. Some of the nurses tapped a few of my classmates on the shoulder and told them to come out of the room. They could tell that those students were getting light-headed and were about to pass out. But when I got through that, I just knew nursing was the thing for me.
“I’ve been an LVN for about 25 years. It probably never would have happened if I hadn’t heard that voice all those years ago. I figure it was God, an angel, Jesus, some kind of high intervention. I mean, I heard it. Just like you hear my voice now.”

On a more personal note: “Five years ago I met a very special lady, the dream of my life. I love her with all my heart, soul and spirit. She’s one in a million, the light of my life. Her name is Pam.”
