Mounted patrol officer at home in the saddle

Norman Anderson with his Baytown Police Department Mounted Patrol horse, Sam.
“I’ve been on mounted patrol since it started, almost 22 years ago. I remember because it was the same year my son was born.
“Growing up, my grandfather rode and I used to go on trail rides with him. I also rode a lot with my friends. I was always around horses, so me becoming part of the mounted patrol was a natural fit.
“I’m working out in my Tahoe whenever they won’t let me ride my horse. But I’m always looking for a reason to be on my horse.”
What do you like most about it?
“Just the freedom of being out in the open. I love it. And then the bond with the horse. I mean, it’s one thing to just go ride. But when you spend time with them and you bond with them, it’s pretty special. If I could be on my horse every day, I’d be a very happy man.”
