Go-getter volunteer follows in his parents’ footsteps

“I’m not a sit-down type of person. I always have to be doing something. My dad was a go-getter. He was a dreamer and a doer. He would say something and then do it. I guess I followed in his footsteps.

“Plus, my mom was always volunteering. I would tell her, ‘You need to slow down because you’re getting up there in age.’ She passed away when she was 79 but she was active until the end, always helping out and doing things for other people.

“Every time I go to the doctor, they ask me to rate my pain and how I feel on a scale of 1 to 10. One of the questions is how does my back (injury, followed by three surgeries) affect my daily life. I always put down 3 or 4. I’m not going to let it affect my daily life. I’m going to do as much as I possibly can for as long as I can. I’m not going to let it hold me back. I never have. It’s just my personality. I love life. I want to get as much out of it as I can.”
