He may be homeless, but he’s not lazy

Lee's hands in his lap

Since Lee has been out of work and down on his luck, he carries his few extra clothing items in a plastic bag.

“I’m thankful there’s a church here that on Thursdays I can sign up to get food. But it’s gotten to a point where you might see me at your local gas station asking for change. I don’t ask for this change for any habit. I do it to wash my clothes and buy food to eat to survive.

“I used to work at the Golden Corral here. You could see me walking all the way to work with my white shirt and black pants on, and I was never late. I also worked at McDonald’s. I needed both jobs to pay the bills.

“I’ve never been a lazy type person. I had my first job when I was 14 years old. My grandpa would tell me, ‘Grandson, you need to get up and mow five yards a day and wash six cars a day. Work from sunup to sundown.’ He taught me that hard work is an honest living. He said that if people in the community see you doing that, they will respect you. They will know you are very dependable and they will hire you. So that’s pretty much the way I was raised up.

“Right now I’m struggling, but I have two applications in for janitor jobs at the college. With the grace of God, I’ll try that and also see if I can get a dishwashing job somewhere. I just have to start all over again. I’m going to have to work my ass off and ask God to help me get my life back like I had it.”
