“I met my husband when I was 15 and started dating him when I was 16. He was 23 at the time. We both have single mothers who raised us, and I withheld how old he was from my mother. When she found out, she was like, ‘You’re not going anywhere with him. Have you lost your mind?’ And his mother was like, ‘Are you crazy?’ He had never, ever dated anyone younger.
“But we got married right after I graduated high school. It’s weird looking back now because we have a 17-year-old daughter, and I cannot imagine her bringing home someone older like that.
“I think our relationship has worked so well because we’re very open-minded and supportive of one another. We try to follow that golden rule of treating others as we want to be treated. We use that in our marriage a lot. We’ve had some arguments, but we work them out. We’ve never broken up. I don’t think I’ve ever had a day since I was 16 that I didn’t see him or talk to him.
“We’ll be celebrating 17 years of marriage on Aug. 18. I consider him my greatest accomplishment.”
